(thematic section edited by Giorgio Valentino Federici, Silvia Guetta e Severino Saccardi)

For the Centenary of the University of Florence, this volume is created in collaboration with the project “Cultura della pace e cittadinanza globale”. From several viewpoints and disciplinary competences, the various contributions of the volume focus on topics linked to the interdependence and contradictory nature of our contemporary world. On the one hand, being a ‘citizen of the world’ appears substantially as a given, on the other though, there is an overbearing resurgence of nationalisms and identity-type instances. This duality raises pressing political, cultural and educational questions, pointing otìut the necessity of a new paideia for the third millennium. To the thematic reflections proposed by the various authors, texts focusing on personalities linked to the history of the University of Florence, who have made a valuable contribution to the life of the city and to education for peace and civil coexistence in our recent history, are added.
