(special monographic volume edited by Miriana Meli, Riccardo Noury, Severino Saccardi, Martina Ucci)
This volume is the product of a collaboration with Amnesty International Italy. To retrace the history and work of this international NGO, which has been committed to the defence of fundamental freedoms since 1961, the year of its foundation by Peter Benenson, we chose as a starting point the 2022-2023 Report on the situation of human rights in the world. For the 75th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), we thought it appropriate to develop a critical reflection on the situation of human rights on a global level, soliciting a series of interventions, contributions and analyses on different situations and diverse aspects of our complex contemporary reality. For an ‘atlas’ of human rights, hints and notes to topics related to the fundamental freedoms indicated in the Declaration, as well as social rights, such as the condition of women and gender issue, the environmental crisis and the access to natural resources will be addressed. Which point has reached the long march of human rights?
From the various articles, a picture rich in lights and shadows seems to emerge (sometimes also with very gloomy hues, especially if we look at today). Nonetheless, looking at a longer distance, since 1948 and 1961 we can state significant steps forward.
